A field guide needs a species.
Some families have a coat of arms. Ours has a boarding pass. After enough years of watching ourselves plan the next trip during the current one, we accepted the diagnosis and did what any self-respecting naturalist would do: we classified it.
Homo mandralus — the wandering species. Not tourists, exactly; not migrants, exactly. People who settle enough to know the grocer, and roam enough to keep a packed cube in the cupboard. This site is their manuscript, written from inside the species.
Everything here serves one question: what is a place actually like to live in? So we research the unglamorous things — what’s in the food, whether the courts work, what the schools cost — and we write down the journeys in between.
